'System Check' Malware - BEWARE
« on: Jan 25, 2012, 15:56 »
Look out for a malware program called 'System Check'. I've had an infection at work today.

Typically it loads itself as a Trojan from an infected website, then starts popping up boxes onscreen telling you the hard disk is failing on your PC. It then runs a spoof scanner program telling you the disk has all kinds of problems and informs you that you can pay for the full version to have the identified errors removed. This is a scam. There isn't anything wrong with the PC, except for the malware program! It disables Task Manager and hides all the short cuts on the desktop as well as buggering up the Programs Menu (links to programs are deleted). My wallpaper has gone and other commonly used files are hidden (with the attribute in 'Properties')

It's taken me and our IT buddy two hours to get rid of the bastard thing. The worrying thing is, our company scanner (Microsoft Forefront EndPoint Protection) detected the malware on the website, asked me if I wanted to allow access, to which I answered 'No', but then it allowed the Trojan to download and install anyway. In the history log it claimed it had been removed. Errr No!

Malware Bytes helped out again  8)

A really good. free for home use, Anti Spyware/Malware removal tool...easy to use, and generally way better than the Payware stuff from Norton, McAfee etc

Everyone should have Malwarebytes and Crap Cleaner on their system as standard. Run them regularly and they'll keep 99% of nasties out and your PC running smoothly.

Whats worrying for the likes of myself and probably 99% of the population, dont have a computer literate mind. We see these things and click on them out of politeness or curiosity and bingo we have a virus/infection etc. I am currently doing a workshop that encourages people to learn more about using their computers and what to do in certain situations. I think everyone using the internet should have this knowledge, as you never know whos watching you!!
