Title: Sat Nav which one do you recommend ??
Post by: CLANSMAN on May 25, 2008, 01:10
Hi All,

Starting a new job role shortly and going to be doing a vast amount of driving up and the UK only

So been to Halfrauds today to see what they had on this half price sale,  but it looks like out of date rubbish and a bit of research confirms that the models on sale are useless

So what do I buy ?     the geek was pushing tom tom  like he was on commision,   but  had a look on ebay and there massive amounts of faulty ones and customer return or graded refurb items

Dont want to spend more than £100 quid really    and they have a garmin or navman   instore for this price

Any ideas ?

I have a 2008 map in good old paper and have decided to get  techy  after years of guessing

We have a TomTom One with the Western Europe map.  We think it is very good at getting you to an address in (say) a big city.  However, for general journeys it will always try to get you to go via motorways and main trunk routes, and a good road atlas will do you better.  And for local use I still think you can't beat the OS 1:50,000 maps.

Bear in mind however, that like all these electronic computer-like devices this gadget has all sorts of menus and you can spend many happy hours finding out what they all do.  Some may well resolve the points I have listed above.

The manual is basic in the extreme - little more than how to switch on.

There is a programme you install on your computer - you plug the TomTom One into a USB port and it automatically updates itself in certain respects.  NB that to buy the latest version of (say) the Western Europe map will set you back some £50, and you can buy a lot of atlases for that !

Also you need to use your own judgement sometimes and NOT do what it tells you.  Updates or no, it can still be out of date and only recently (in France) we were directed into a certain street only to be met by a bollard in the middle of the road.

Hope this helps.
