Anybody use subtitles?
« on: Sep 22, 2006, 16:28 »
I've got noisy pets, and quite often they stop me from hearing the TV. I therefore use subtitles quite a bit and read TV. It's odd for a perfectly good-hearing individual to resort to subtitles, but such is the way.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else uses subtitles on digital TV?

With teletext the subtitles were pretty accurate, but the subtitles on digital TV seem to be done by complete fools. Any live programme is littered with spelling mistakes and worse.

Not just simple things like calling Senator McCain "McContain" or deciding not to even attempt spelling Governor Schwarzenegger (which was quite funny, cos there was this huge pause, and then it just said "the governor"  :) No, it's things where in political shows like Question Time they use one wrong word and make an argument completely turn the other way round. Last night they had "Charles Kennedy" rubbishing Gordon Brown, instead of "Charles Clarke"...

It's funny for me, but I feel sorry for any deaf people, who must get well confused.

Pardon?

Reminds me of an annoucement of a technical fault on the BBC in the late 80's :

"We apologise to our deaf viewers for the loss of sub-titles".? :D

I sometimes use subtitles late at night when the house is asleep, so that I can turn the sound right down and still enjoy they film.  You are right what you say though, some of the translations are really quite crap.  :P

Er, how exactly?

If it says things like Charles Kennedy rallied Blairites against Gordon Brown then anyone who can't hear what was actually said will wonder why Charles Kennedy did that.
