Hi all,

Heading home tonight from Durham and  overtaken by a few blue lights,  police cars,  Fire engine and fire support vehicles ....  all heading down the A167 at great speed

A minute after ...   news flash ...   Ferryhill market place is on fire ?   possibly a building ?

I see now on the northern echo   that its a pub ?

Can anyone update whats going on ?

it's the Post Boy some of the upstairs windows are out, difficult to see how bad it is in the dark, there were 3 fire engines there at one point !

Rang the Greyhound about 8pm and was told it was The Boy. They said the fire was mainly upstairs, but it's hard to see in the dark. Some windows are out and look black inside so looks like to be extensive smoke damage. Will know more tomorrow.

There's now a report on the Northern Echo website

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/4227359.Pub_blaze_causes_serious_damage/

A PUBLIC house has been severely damaged by fire tonight.

Four crews were called to the Post Boy Inn on Market Street in Ferryhill, County Durham, shortly after 6pm.

The first and second floors of the building were well alight when fire fighters arrived.

Two crews from Spennymoor, one from Newton Aycliffe and an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene.

It is thought the blaze started in a landing area and spread to the rest of the building.

Four fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent into the pub to tackle the fire.

By the time it was extinguished, the top two floors of the building were extensively damaged.

Watch manager Malcolm Woodward, from Newton Aycliffe fire station, said tonight's blustery weather made fighting the fire even more difficult.

"As we got there we could see smoke coming out of the upstairs windows on the second and first floors," he said.

"If it had gone into the roof we maybe would have lost the whole pub.

"The conditions were quite difficult. The crews had to get through a small hallway to get to the first floor landing.

"The heat they faced was very intense."

An investigation into the cause of the fire will get underway tomorrow.

Maybe held the bar-b-q inside because of the high winds

I went past the next morning on a detour,    just to see the damage

Ok ....    I was expecting the roof off and major devastation

Thankfully  from the outside ,  saw a few broken windows and  smoke marks ....  looked  very BLACK...    but no major external damage

Interior damage can be a funny thing....    so maybe its worse than it looks

Any updates from the Ferryhill residents ?

Will it repair ....    and where they insured ?

The pub has been closed since the fire. Looking at the smoke damage, I don't think we'll see the pub back in action for a long while. I guess it depends on the insurance payout, but I don't think the current financial climate and the state of the trade lends itself to a quick return.
