Litter scattered around our region
« on: Mar 22, 2005, 13:26 »
Travelling around our region recently, I can't help noticing the huge amount of litter and rubbish that is scattered in hedges at the sides of our roads. There's plastic bags and cartons, bottles, sweet wrappers and all kinds of other stuff that looks appalling to anyone travelling through the area. Just try travelling the A167 and see what is in the hedgerows.

Do the regional Councils have any policy to clean this mess up? I think it's as bad as fly-tipping. Areas around main roads and motorway services are particularly bad, some of the stuff is obviously wind-borne from elsewhere.

What do you think?

Totally agree Bossman. Litter is a real bugbear of mine. It makes our towns and countryside look a mess.
I travel up the motorway each day and one section of it has just been cleared of rubbish - what a difference!
Can't remember the last time I saw someone from the council pickingup around Ferryhill.

I regularly see blokes picking up rubbish on the roadside of the A690, leaving it in blue plastic bags to be picked up later.

Also see mc donalds staff regularly doing a pick-up around their outlets.

Many fly tippers nowadays actually use the roadside as lots of little piles are less noticable than one big one.  How many times have you seen one tyre every 30 yards along a dual carriageway?

My views are the same as other peoples in respect of littering. A thouht that i have had for a long time is .....why can we not use some of the prisoners from local jails like in America where they are in chain gangs. After all they get paid for being inside and it is one way of putting a bit back into the communities they took from.

I agree - they get a cushy option in jail

I've heard people say that so many times.

Has anyone actually visited a gaol? I've often wondered what the regime is like in Durham, Holme House or Frankland.

The litter is always there in the hedgerows, all year round. It's just more visible during the Winter months when there isn't the foliage to hide it. Also, because it is in the bushes, I think it must be very difficult to extract.
Do borough Councils have a duty to remove litter? Can they be fined for not maintaining a certain level of service?
What could be done to reduce fly-tipping?
When I get the tires changed, on my car, I pay for environmental disposal of the old tires. Yet... I see piles of tires dumped, all over the place.... Could some of these tires be mine?... Or yours?

May be if packaging was made of paper like it used to be, instead of plastics,or at least some of it,there would be more chance of it rotting down.Think what harm these plastic bags do to farm animals and wild life.Lots of animals have been found dead, choked to death by eating plastic bags and wrappings.

Unfortunately - so long as the council make it more difficult for small contractors to dispose of their rubbish in public waste depots then we will continue to see the rubbish tipped in the streets.  :(
