MRSA - Not just in hospitals!
« on: Sep 26, 2006, 01:56 »
My Mother has just been diagnosed with Community Aquired MRSA. Disabled & in a residential home and never been in hospital, she is cared for by myself, carers and district nurses.
Needless to say she is distraught, as I am, because I thought she was somewhere safe!

Really sorry to hear that. Hope she makes a good recovery. I suppose it's the kind of condition that will thrive if the conditions are favourable for it. Is she the only one to have picked it up?

Wasn't there a TV programme about MSRA? It's on everyone's skin. It just needs a break in the skin to have an effect. That doesn't mean everyone will get it if they cut themselves, but simply washing with soap and water can help prevent it.

Another dangerous one is Erysipelas. No it's not a sexually transmitted disease! It's on the skin. It used to be fatal prior to the 1930s but can now be treated. I got it about 20 years ago from a small cut on my face.

No, she's not the only one. Apparently another two residents have it (& thats been kept very quiet) so it's busy being spread around the building. Up until now the only thing which is at epedemic proportions....... is apathy about handwashing!

Now they are going to test everyone coming into a hospital for MRSA, its airborne and 1 out 3 people have it so its going to be hard to get rid of it.
