New Tescos In Consett
« on: Aug 10, 2012, 13:03 »
The new Tescos Supermarket build has started on The Old Steel Works site in Consett. I hope it doesnt impact to much on the smaller shops. I prefer the fruit and veg shops, bakerys etc for the personal touch.

its up to the people of Consett to decide that auntie. I always (well mostly) buy from fruit and veg shops because i dont want fruit to ripen at home, i want to eat it now!

I can only compare this with Newton Aycliffe

I feel it ruined the town and made the shopping centre a ghost parade

I cannot believe aldi is trying to compete with a new store near by

Suspect morrisons have had to invest in Consett to keep there customers going to Tesco

Price wars don't help Independant traders
That specialist tv shop is going to feel it   Leonard's fell thanks to Tesco

Morrisons new superstore will open around November according to a person I know that works there. Should reckon that Tesco will open early next year depending on how bad the winter is. And winters can be rough in Consett. The town centre shops are suffering now mainly due to having nowhere to park, I believe these two giants will practically wipe them out. Shame about the local traders who have served the Consett people for generations.
But in a town where the powers that be have spent the last 3 years argueing as to where a new school should be built, without a second thought to the children whos education is now suffering, what chance have we got ??
P.S. the 2 new superstores are only 2 hundred yards apart.

Sadly all under one roof   one stop shop is the way we have been forced ? blinkered into the modern day shopping experience and when time is precious

Why buy a branded make when you can buy a cheaper alternative supermarket brand electrical item
or nowadays  whatever

the days of independents are now specialists as how they keep trading in this cut throat society

Modern age modern way      who or whats to blame ?

Can we blame the refridgerator ?    as we needed to buy fresh goods daily

Isn't the new Consett school under construction ?   I heard Carillion was appointed new contracter builder ?

Sorry Clansman, not explaining myself very well. There was a decision made to build two new academies, one at Stanley , and one at Consett. Although I haven't been past it I've been told the one at Stanley is well on the way to completion.
Unfortunately due to two different groups of power mad politicians, unable to decide where the best place is to build the one in Consett there has yet to be a spade used. Caused a lot of bad feeling in the town and after years of name calling and point scoring between them its still stalemate.
Its cost a lot of money so far and there is no end in sight, but hey when did politicians ever worry about things like that.

Tell you what are nice

Those new Story Homes at Shotley Bridge near the hospital

Probably the best quailty new build houses I have ever seen  but at a price too

Cannot believe after the demise of the steel works and all the doom and gloom that came after for so many years and now   BOOM

Lets spend some money and invest in Consett and surrounding areas

500 homes to be built and only 1 sold     times are still tough

its Ok putting pen to paper but its the 25 -30 years of debt   LARGE Debt to pay for somehow

Not sure if I'd be very happy after buying a new house to find a super store so near my front door , taking all the traffic, litter etc. that comes with it.

Hi! All
For those of you who are complaining about the lack of the building on the Consett Academy, it is not the council to blame but actually people who live nearby in Consett who are complaining about the fact that the site should remain a playing field and not be built on.

Otherwise the building work would have started by now, but due to the objections as described above it is sadly holding up work starting which is a shame considering the old council offices have already been knocked down.

Sadly if the council rule in the favour of the objectors I feel that not only will the site become a waste ground but the sports centre which would have moved will just be allowed to fall into disrepair and be forced to close, meaning that whole site will just turn to a waste ground.

Cant believe that a few objectors are stopping back handers getting dished out for planning permission!

No backhanders, its a Durham C.C. project. The objectors have delayed the build for over 3 years now by taking it to a judial review in London. In the Journal just last week it stated that there would be no decision until after Christmas. Basically its just a point scoring war between two lots of politicians who have gone past the point of no return. To hell with how much money has been lost over the last 3 years in legal fees etc. No concern to the damage being done to childrens education due to split sites. It also concerns a new sports centre, swimming baths, and football stadium. No thought given to any of this either.
If the people of Consett have half a brain they will show excatly what they think of this bunch of muppets in next years election.

It won't matter though, the ones they vote out will be replaced by others who'll be exactly the same. They'll promise all sorts when not in office, but as soon as the feet are under the desk, they'll forget all their promises. I hate all politicians with a passion.

Big Cheese i agree with you wholeheartedly. I havent had much to do with the council but i am enraged at how they make decisions to suit themselves and not the folk they work for. I wish Consett had a town council . Maybe that is the way foreward for us to be heard and all given a fair hearing instead of men in suits who dont even know Consett making plans for our future .

The new Morrisons super store in Consett opens on Monday. Had a look round inside today . State of the art shop which will make shopping a pleasure. Light, spacious, plenty room between the shelves. Cafe, toilets , take-a-way. Reckon this place will pack the customers in.

Steelwork well up for the new Tesco. Looks like a very large shop. Felt sorry for the guys putting it up, they must have been frozen stiff working in such a bleak location these last couple of months.
