Plans for Ark required . . .
« on: May 21, 2009, 14:38 »
Thunderstorm today at lunchtime, so we had another dose of "Our Little Local Problem".

I have reported it (again) to our local MP, (Mrs Dari Taylor, Stockton South), our local Councillors, Northumbrian Water, and Stockton Borough Council's "Care for Your Area" dept.

It has done no good before (lots of activity, digging of holes, CCTV cameras along the sewers etc) and I doubt it will do any good this time.

Ho Hum.

Northumbrian Water won't do much unless it's a leak of their supply, in which case you might be lucky. I know a village up in Weardale that have had a stream of potable water running past their houses washing into their foundations in a self-carved gully almost a foot deep for months and months, and NWL do their best to deny all knowledge, and the road is currently up again for the nth time looking for the fault the council and NWL between them have both decided is each other's issue.

Don't worry, soon there'll be 22000 new homes built on flood plains, and then watersheds and drains will become VERY hot topics!

I think you will find that NWL are responsible not only for the supply of water but for the disposal of sewage too - and we have paid them £234.66 this year (1 Apr 2009 to 31 Mar 2010) in "Sewerage Charges" to prove the point !

NWL have not argued about their responsibilty, and have done a lot of work on this sewer over the last 5 years, but all to no avail.

The problem is that this sewer which was put in when this estate was built in the early 1960s is not able to cope with
1.  increased rainfall
2.  extra run off from car parks, paved driveways, patios, conservatories, new housing etc etc

One day, when we are long gone, NWL may have enough money in the kitty to upgrade the system locally, but I doubt we shall be here to see it.

Today, Friday 22 May, NWL rode over the hill to sort us out :

NWL made millions last year.  Millions.

Well, glad they're having a go!
