Sainsbury's in Sedgefield
« on: Feb 12, 2013, 22:02 »
It looks like the new Sainsbury's supermarket will be opening in May this year. The word on the street is that they have bought George Bolam's presumably for car parking. If that is the case it will be a shame, used to go regularly to Bolam's and i find Sainsbury's expensive.

The sainsburys carpark (according to original plans) is behind Bolams with the actual shop in 'the field' beyond that.  You would have to shoot George Bolam to give that up. Always there on a Saturday afternoon when other bosses might be on the golf course etc.

nice to see the developers have donated £150,000 to the community inc £20,000 to nearby Fishburn. Yes they will be making a packet themselves but nice gesture. (Even though I won't be seeing a pound of it!)

Now open! Looks like George Bolam's done a deal to have their sign on the corner of his land, his names at the top and his car park has been extended in the process!

We went on saturday to see how it compares with Durham/ Bishop Auckland, etc.

As Mike says, it is not as big as I thought it would be either.

One thing that amused me was that there had been objections to it due to perceived traffic problems ....... the only thing that was causing traffic problems was the queue of traffic trying the get in and out of Bolam's car park.

This is just my take on the 'size'. Sedgefield sainsburys is a large supermarket. Next 'size' up would be a hypermarket for which I am guessing more rates etc. As per other similar stores, over the years, once they prove they are successful, they will get extensions / second floors etc. Land for which they no doubt own.
