The law is an ass!

"The law is an ass," say traders

A ROW has broken out over proposals for a weekly market because it is within a donkey ride of existing stalls.

Traders in North Shields want to hold market to try to woo shoppers back to the town centre.

But officials across the river in South Shields say an old law prevents other towns "within a donkey ride" having stalls.

Maggie Richardson, president of North Shields Chamber of Trade, said: "This is ridiculous - the law really is an ass.

"It's terribly important to North Shields that we have something to attract people here and a weekly market would be wonderful.

"People don't come to the town centre any more and anything that's going to improve that should be welcomed.

"South Shields should not be able to dictate policy going back all those years. It's just silly."

South Tyneside Council says it secured the rights to be the only town within a donkey ride or within walking distance in one day and is determined to protect them.

But traders north of the river say the rules are an unfair John Harrison, elected mayor of North Tyneside, said: "Our priority is to support the traders in our borough.

"That's why I'm backing North Shields Chamber of Trade and their idea of a weekly market for North Shields.

"This seems like a 12th Century approach to a 21st Century opportunity to give people in North Tyneside more choice in their shopping."

A South Tyneside Council spokesman said: "South Shields market is both vibrant and popular, and attracts thousands of visitors to the Borough every year.

"It is of great importance to South Tyneside and, as its owner, South Tyneside Council has a duty to protect it from rivals.

"The council is entitled to take action against any rival markets that set up within a radius of six and two-third miles from South Shields market square.

"However, the council has given its consent to specialist markets being held over short periods within this distance."

But unless the donkey can walk on water ( or is allowed on the Ferry ) then it's actually more than 6 2/3 miles to travel between the 2 centres? I know this is sad but my route planner says it's 7.2miles

What is needed is an 'AquaDonkey', specially designed to get to those difficult places. No need to walk around that river bank, just go straight through on your 'AquaDonkey'.
