Zetland Lifeboat museum
« on: Sep 16, 2005, 19:12 »
A great small local museum to spend a bit of time whilst in Redcar. The purpose built boathouse is the home of the 'Zetland' which is the oldest remaining lifeboat in the world (1802) pre. RNLI !!
As well a being responsible for saving over 500 lives she now welcomes thousands of visitors to her home....take a look around the upstairs exhibition and the fishermans cottage etc., It's free and the volunteer guides will make your visit a memorable one.

But please, remember to make a donation to a worthy cause, which doesn't get one penny from the Government. Disgraceful.

Agreed, a very interesting museum and it is free too. As you say Bazza, remember to make a donation or buy from the impressive gift shop. Unfortunately this thread may be a bit late because it closes in 13 days and doesn't reopen until May 1st.

I think you will find if you speak to most members of the RNLI they are quite proud of the fact that they do not get government cash.....yes its a very worthy cause and they do very well to raise the money they do get.

I think it is magnificent what they do. I especially like the gift shop in Redcar because those miniature models of the various lifeboats are really good quality and reasonably priced. I also like to keep updated with the bulletin in the window which lists the dates of launches and rescues etc.

I think we are well catered for in Redcar by the RNLI. We have the modern facility housing two fast lifeboats and gift shop and then further along the Prom we have the museum with the oldest remaining lifeboat in the world.
