Buying property in Spain
« on: Jan 05, 2018, 11:10 »
Is there anyone out there who has bought property in Spain?

We’re starting to think about the possibilities of owning somewhere in the future, but would like to hear from anyone who has already done it and who lives there now, either full time or part time. Any pitfalls? What are the best areas?

Any help appreciated  :)

A friend bought one about 12 years ago, got tired of going to the same place several times a year so sold it at a big loss.  Lot's of pitfalls with property laws and ownership.  It's even possible to buy and then several years later find that you don't own it as someone still owes money on the property even though you did it all through a solicitor and appeared all above board.

Keep your money in your pocket and use it for holidays of your choice,  Australia was our choice for 23 years, for 5 weeks each year when we were working, then for 12 weeks a year after retirement in 2,000.

Thanks Lancelot. That’s the only worry, getting bored. Maybe it would be better to just rent when we want to, then we can change places?

You can get a lot of holidays for £90,000 that you might pay for an apartment.  If you casn'y pay cash you are definitely on a loser. Don't consider it as an investment, my friend did and he almost had to give it away for peanuts. It was in Fuengirola. Then there are rates, standing elec/gas charges, local taxes, plus property insurance etc.

I see where you’re coming from Lancelot. Looking around on the net I can see properties with long term rental options available for 3-4 months. This would be ideal because we could disappear from the worst of the UK weather in winter and come back in spring.

We went to West Australia, Mandurah, when I was working for 5 weeks each winter, then when we retired we went for Jan, Feb, Mar each year. Toured most of W.A in 23 years there.

So Boris The Spider, what did you decided to do, buy a property in Spain or keep your money in your pocket?
