*Warning to Dog Owners*
« on: Jul 15, 2006, 18:29 »
With this warm weather upon us, now is a good time to warn dog owners about the dangers of keeping your dog locked in your car.

Dogs die from heat exhaustion if kept locked in cars!

I saw a police officer smashing the windows of a car yesterday, in ASDA's car park, to release a badly overheated dog.
The lady owner was very annoyed to see her window broken, and probably more annoyed when she was arrested on the spot!

It is not only cruel...It can land you in Court!!

DONT DO IT!

Apparently an animal can die in a very short time if shut in a hot car so it's a timely warning and there's no excuse for it as everyone well knows how hot it is sitting in a car with the sun blazing on it.
I have the RSPCA emergency "cruelty" number stored on my mobile phone and if I saw a dog shut in a car and distressed I wouldn't hesitate to phone it.? 08705555999

Every now and again I think that people should be tested before being allowed to have certain pets. You hear about issues like the lady in the car park at ASDA's you mentioned too often for my liking. Maybe there could be worked out some kinda rule set to see if the right people keep dogs ? Like the couples who have to go through many different tests before they get the go-ahead to adapt a child.

I agree, my sister and I have long thought that there should be some sort of test to sit before one is allowed to "own" a pet, as it is anyone can get one on a whim and the poor creature is then theirs to do with as they please? :x

I agree.
Thankfully Courts have the power to ban people from owning animals...But the very fact is, that an animal has already suffered before that happens!
(I often think that people should be vetted before having kids too...but thats another story!)

Good idea. It would also reduce the population.

There was a case here a couple of years ago with two mentally and physically handicapped people wanting to have a baby together. They lived in the same secured building complex where they got care 24-7. They fell in love and the lass ended up pregnant. But she was told by the social services that she wouldn't be able to keep the baby because she wasn't fit to look after the baby herself and nor was the father. Somehow this became public news and it created quite the uproar. Both the decision from the social services to tell her she couldn't keep the baby but also the couple's decision to go through with their wish of having a family of their own. It went to court here and in the end the outcome was that the couple wasn't allowed to begin a family of their own as it wasn't in the best interest and welfare of a possible child.

It's a tough decision to call under any cercumstances, I'm sure, as there are prob valid points on both sides but comparing that very case with the issue on dog ownership here, well, I know it sounds very double standard and I wish it didn't but I find it hard to grasp that anyone, people or court alike can tell someone not to have any children but on the other hand I find it almost needed in some cases to have these kinda rules to apply with animals...

That prob sounded daft, sorry, but I dunno how to explain it any better? :(

I see where you are coming from Alex.
Tough call indeed.

I sometimes think that the word 'Rights' is banded about far too much!
(a Bit Like my other major gripe... 'Hero')

Animal Rights?....NAH!....Animal Welfare? Yep!

Human Rights?.....within the law of the land that it concerns...then yes.
The problem is a wide one.

There dont seem to be any lines drawn in the sand anymore!

Once the system of law breaks down...we are doomed!
(sorry, I have kinda ventured off tack, but hey!) :D

yeah not so much tested now but tested before the animal is in thier care, like a driving licence, have a theory like have a written test before the animal is handed over about its health and how to prevent it suffering, its basically using your brain, its hot enough for people to stay in cars on hot days and we dont have the fur well not all of us.
