9/11 'Fact-File'
« on: Sep 12, 2011, 11:22 »
There's a 'fact-file' list in one of the papers here today on the effects of September 11, 2001. One of the twenty 'facts' say that twenty per cent of all Americans know at least one person killed in the terror attacks. How is that even possible ? Aren't there like 200+ million Americans ? How can twenty per cent of them know one of the 3,000 odd people being killed ?

The list also says that 150 songs have been banned from US radio airplay since the attack ten years ago. One of them being 'In the Air Tonight' by Phil Collins. I can sort of understand that. Better than I can understand the first 'fact' anyway.

Let's do some maths  :D

20% of 200 million is 40 million.

40,000,000 / 3,000 is approx 13,000.

Each person in America would therefore need to know 13,000 people for this to be true.

However, if each American has 200 Facebook friends, then it's almost certain that 'a friend of a friend' will have been killed on September 11th 2001.

Does that make it true? Well, sort of, in a 6 degrees of separation kind of way.

Yes i agree, it does take a bit of stretching for it to be anywhere near true.
