Bank account cleaned out
« on: Aug 28, 2010, 08:59 »
I've never understood why people go overdrawn.

I'm currently overdrawn as someone else happened to empty the balance of my wages from my Bank account this week. I've filled in all the relevant paperwork but, as yet, I'm not yet sure wheather the bank will refund all related charges and/or the missing funds as it was my debit account not a credit card it's at their discretion - in the meanwhile my account is suspended  :(

If the card was in your possession all the time and it's clearly a fraud, there shouldn't be a problem, you should get everything back. You are only liable for the first £50 of fraudulent use (on any card, debit or credit) once reported, provided you haven't been negligent with pins, card nos, etc. Do you know where the card was used and what was bought? Did the bank tell you?

I hadn't used the card for a couple of weeks and I don't do online banking - hence the first time I noticed something was wrong was when I went to access my wages after payday and by then the damage was done.

There's a pile of paperwork arrived yesterday asking for confirmation of the details taken by the branch, and a list of transaction requesting that I mark the ones that aren't mine. It seems the big one is to O2 at Leeds? And I'm not even with them for either phone - surely if it's a phoneline then it's tracable?

Hope you get it sorted out soon, some banks are better then others at this and truely hope you are not with Santander, they seem to have a reputation.

yes it's the Halifax. I have a new debit card in the post this morning, but haven't tried to use it yet.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that they have replaced the cash as quickly as the card

Make sure you register for the extra online security thing that Halifax do, this asks for another additional username/password on-the-fly when a transaction is made. It works with both debit and credit cards and should prevent online fraud even if someone knows your card no./security no/pin combination.

I got my statement through today - I've had the funds put back into the the account as a "debit card refund" on the day they were withdrawn from the account. So other than in the IN/OUT numbers looking strange everything is back to normal.

10/10 for the Halifax
