Most days weather permitting I walk along the Waskerley Way. Part of the C to C its a no go area on a weekend.
Headphones on, head down, arse up they fly along trying to break the world speed record with total disreguard for walkers. If you don't move out of their way fast enough a torrent of abuse ensures. As in everything not all of them are like this but a large % are.

Totally agree, as a rider you need to be aware of what is around you at all times, also just wait a couple of months and you will see the annual idiots on the road that think others have infra red sight.

Try going past Durham University areas when it is dark on an early evening and see how many cyclists (and cars) do not have any lights on.

Another one is when driving, look out for pedestrians wearing headphones or talking on a mobile phone walking towards a junction or edge of a pavement, if it was not for the fact I had seen him and saw he was not looking anywhere but his phone (and was within the speed limit), there could have been another fatality in Ferryhill. (A blast on the horn woke him up)

Kids on bikes in the dark are my particular bugbear. No lights and no road sense make them prime candidates for being knocked off. Hoodies up, restricting their vision, pedalling like crazy and weaving all over the place. Just as much a hazard to cyclists as motorists. A lot of the fatalities among cyclists are kids, who are just too young to be on the road.

Mind you, riding without lights isn't restricted to just cyclists. How many grey coloured cars have you seen (or not) in the fog, at dusk, with no lights or only sidelights? You can't see them until they're on top of you.

I drive a black car, as soon as the visibility is reduced the lights go on, that is the dipped beams NOT those useless, candle in the wind, parking lights you see some driving with thinking it is enough to be seen with.

In some countries it is law when driving in the rain that if you need to have your wipers on (full or intermittant) then you need your lights on (dipped beam NOT parking lights)

I believe In the UK if you deem it necessary to have your lights on then it must be dipped headlights not the dimdip that replaced parking lights.
What annoys me more is the morons flying down the outside lane with headlights blazing expecting people to move out of their way because of it

Bloody stupid.

and it's not just in this country, other countries are now fining pedestrians and cyclists for their actions.

It's insane to block one of your senses whilst riding/driving. Your whole perception of what is around you changes. It should be as illegal to cycle whilst wearing headphones as it is driving whilst on a mobile phone. I suppose any copper could stop you and nail you for driving without due care and attention. Maybe they should start to do this.
