Does anyone believe .....

..... that Newcastle can realistically avoid a relegation battle again this season? The squad is now significantly weaker than the one they were relegated with in 2009.

I think it is going to be a struggle, but with teams like Blackpool, Wolves, Wigan, etc, it will be a close call.

The odds at my end on teams being relegated / staying up are:

Blackpool  1.20 / 3.60
West Brom  1.75 / 1.85
Wigan  2.70 / 1.35
Wolves  2.70 / 1.35
Newcastle  3.25 / 1.25
Bolton  4.00 / 1.16
West Ham  4.00 / 1.16
Stoke  5.50 / 1.08
Birmingham  6.00 / 1.06
Fulham  6.50 / 1.05
Sunderland  9.00 / No odds available

No odds available on other teams.

Am surprised to see five teams according to these odds are more likely to be relegated than both Bolton and West Ham, two teams I can easily see being in trouple throughout the season. If the people setting these odds are right then Newcastle shouldn't worry too much and Sunderland will finish 9th come May...

A 16th place finish then, based on those odds, with Blackpool, West Brom and Wigan being relegated. Bolton and West Ham are 'established' Premier League teams, which is presumably why their odds are a bit higher (although Wigan are probably established too - I predict their manager will be sacked this season). Let's see how close they are.

I would say you're obviously going to win the Premier League and the Champions League. It's a good result, but don't get carried away just yet

Don't jump the gun, Villa have just lost their manager and their best player. However Andy Carroll showed true class today.

A season of being knocked out of the premiership, is exactly what prima-donna's need!...all the players who didn't give a flying **** are gone, like that idiot Owen...and now we'll get football played, instead of a Shampoo commercial!

A 6-0 win will do wonders for confidence, but it's still only worth 3 points at the end of the day. Villa looked a side without direction and all chances went in, so lady luck also smiled. I saw a bit of an independent commentary on the BBC website, and it said Newcastle didn't look too solid at the back early on. However, a good home record will keep clubs in the division, so it's a good start.

From the Daily Mash :

NEWCASTLE DELUSIONS INVADE REALITY
23-08-10
THE lunatic fantasy world of Newcastle United supporters has started to manifest itself in this dimension after the club's 6-0 win over Aston Villa.

From whence it came.

Last night the city had begun to morph into a fascinating, cosmopolitan metropolis full of actual humans as the ripples of temporal instability spread throughout the North East.

Quantum footballologist Wayne Hayes said: "The immense pressure of decades of groundless expectation has finally caused a tear in the time/space/football continuum.

"Every unrealistic ambition, Champion's League prediction and plan involving Kevin Keegan's head on Alan Shearer's body could now invade the realm of the sane.

"The win over Villa escaped from a self-perpetuating quantum dimension known as the Benitez Zone, in which up is down, black is white - which actually makes the Newcastle kit look exactly the same - and where Andy Carroll isn't just eight foot of greased monkey."

The effects were first felt when a fan outside St James Park asked a hotdog vendor if they served salad. By late afternoon the shockwaves had spread so far that Sir Alex Ferguson was seen being gracious in a postmatch interview at Fulham.

But Hayes stressed that Newcastle was still connected to a 'universal reality' with the confirmation that Joey Barton continues to be a little ****.

He added: "After a sensible period of stabilisation and a promising start to the season, the fans will soon be asking for Chris Hughton to be replaced by Catherine Cookson and they will all be sucked back through the wormhole, like a Geordie eating his breakfast Pot Noodle."
