Just had another one of those phone calls
« on: Sep 21, 2010, 14:29 »
Purporting to be from O2, an Indian woman, asking if i've had an upgraded handset from O2. I told her no, I was still in contract. She asked me, 'for security reasons', if I could confirm my postcode. I told her to tell me what she thought my post code was, and i'd tell her if she was correct.  Hello? Are you Mr ahura? Hello?

Piss Off !!!

My recent one was telling me that I could clear my debt on my Credit Card.  I asked who it was with.  Answer - Barclaycard.  "Wrong" said I "come on then, tell me which company it is with"

"Oh sorry, Lloyds".   "Wrong would you like to keep trying?"  The line went dead.

I normally string them along for a long time but couldn't be bothered this time.

I had a sales call off Scottish Power last week trying to pressure me into changing supplier to themselves. I repeatedly said i wasn't interested and told them that I had a bad experience with them, she was all nicey nicey until my 3rd no. She then snapped at me by saying i would be stupid to keep the same energy provider for all the time i remain in my property. I did slam the phone down in anger by this point, but what has been bugging me is that what would have happened if i was a pensioner! I emailed their customer services to complain, but alas no reply yet (suprise).

Here a link to the service called the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

TPS Registration

And its sister service the Mail preference Service

MPS online

They are legitimate services which I am signed up to myself, they don't stop all unsolicited mail and telephone calls, but since signing up I have seen a reduction in both.
However they don't stop flyers for local Chinese or Indian Restaruants/take aways being put through the door on a regular basis ...

Do you really think the average crim who is trying to seperate you from your credit card details will take any notice of the TPS? Some of these people aren't even in the UK. They try to trick you into revealing personal details about yourself, usually some missing information they need to complete their 'ID theft set'. Asking for someone's Post Code will reveal the street where you live. If they know your name, they can then find your exact address. This can then be used for fraudulent purposes. You should never give any information to anyone who just rings you up, out of the blue, especially to 'security questions'.

Oh, and they rang me on my mobile. Any genuine O2 employee who rang me on my mobile number would already know which phone I owned, which contract I was on, and whether I was genuinely eligible for an upgrade. The number they were ringing from was 'Blocked', they were lucky I even bothered to answer (I don't normally to anyone who will not reveal their number).

No, but they will stop some calls which reduces the nuisance factor.

They rang on my mobile, from a blocked number. I'm already registered with TPS, who don't cover mobiles.
