Margaret Thatcher dead
« on: Apr 08, 2013, 16:08 »
It may have come to your notice that Margaret Thatcher has died. I suspect that a lot of people in the North East won't be mourning her death too heartily.

I think i would advise against trying to hold a minutes silence before the Newcastle-Sunderland derby this weekend.

The Lord Mayor of Blackpool has suggested they bury her under the dance floor at the Tower Ballroom.

The range of reactions to her popping her clogs just illustrates what a divisive politician she was. Some did very well out of her, others had their livelihoods ruined. Margaret Thatcher's problem was she had no compassion, no concern for the little man who had no alternatives to what he knew best. When the pits were closed, there was no plan to offer people a chance to rebuild, they were just thrown on the scrapheap and told to fend for themselves and not be "moaning minnies". Her policies resulted in the start of the Gordon Gecko culture. Every man for himself. Greed is good. Loadsa Money! Inflation was in double figures, there were more than 3.5m people unemployed. Meanwhile, in the south, deregulated financial services rapidly grew into the behemoth that eventually raped the country of it's wealth, and with no manufacturing base left, we were left to rely on imports, with our utility companies privatised and eventually sold to the highest (foreign) bidder. The consequences of Thatcherism have become 10x more divisive than they initially were, with obscene wealth balanced by abject squalor and poverty, resulting in the welfare system being overloaded by people with no prospects, no self respect and no hope. Their attitude is 'F**k You', the exact same attitude the ordinary man was afforded by Thatcher all those years ago.

But I'm alright, Jack.

'If you can't stand on your own two feet then don't expect the state to support you', was her cry. So how come the states paying for her funeral? wrong wrong wrong.

What puzzles me is if everybody hated her so much - how did she keep getting voted in?

isn't that the way voting works - I mean she'd still get 45% of the votes which meant more people didn't want her in than did...

True - though I suppose that was also true of the Trade Union officials she was fighting.

33 years ago she practically wiped out Consett in one fell swoop, closing the steelworks. For quite a while those of us who lived there thought the town would go under, no great loss just a dirty ,cold place , stuck on hill , miles away from anywhere. Fortunately we survived , got back on our feet and have carried on. I was born in Consett, bred there, and 70 odd years later still live there. Consett people are no different from others in the North East, kind, honest friendly folk, so what shocked me in a small way was the raw hate and anger that still festers for this woman. Like thousands more I won't mourn her but at the end she was just a frail, old woman who died alone. Sad really.

As above , won't mourn her. Can't blame the people who still hate her but these young people wasting their energy on hating her, dont get it.
