Being a pipe smoker (and loving it) I tend to use old-fashioned matches when I light up my beloved pipe. But at the week-end the new girlfriend of a good mate of mine told me if I really had to smoke I should use lighters instead as they are better for the invironment than matches. Is this true ? I mean, matches are made of wood and lighters use some sort of gas; surely using matches harm the invironment less ?

Matches are also better at getting rid of the smell of pungent bottom burps.  :)

Well according to the news the other day, wood burning is the future as endorsed by the forestry commission.

Plus, gas will impare the flavour of the tabacco, depending on how sensitive your taste buds are.

Stick with a proper pipe match and be done with it.

what what!

Gas does indeed change the flavour of the tobacco and despite my work and way of life I'm oddly old-fashioned and traditional in many ways, too, and much prefer using matches. But I'm also very aware of not upsetting our planet more than need be and the lass' comment, though at first sounding daft to me, still made me think about things.

given the forestry commission is now actively encouraging people to burn wood over fossil fuels, I belive you can sleep soundly at night, and flip the bird to this nosy parker lady person.

Burning wood is carbon neutral. But what of the manufacturing cost per light? Hmm
