Mean Spirited man
« on: Nov 28, 2008, 13:31 »
I have been a Self Employed Puter Engineer for the past five or so years.
In this time, I have built up a steady supply of customers in my area, and they know I always give of my very best professionaly, and I pride myself in going that 'extra mile' to help them out, as I know how important computers, and the data therein are to people. (often they have amassed large quantities of Personal photo's or spent a lot of money downloading iTunes or have other important stuff (usually not backed up of course) that they want recovered or saved.

To the 99.9% of those people, I would say a warm thank you to them for being nice people to work with, and I hope in return, I have provided a service, at a good price.

But..........

There is always that 0.1% isnt there?

I was called about a week ago, by a couple who's computer had died on them...(my bread and Butter type job)

Unfortunately, it was a Motherboard fault, and as it was rather old, it meant that the Board, CPU, Memory and case (as it was a Packard Hell) needed replacing.

I duly checked my supplier, and sourced the necessary components, all of which came to a price of £134.66

The first warning shot I received from the 'aledged' customer, when I told him, that his bill would be £174.66 (£40 labour) was that it was too expensive, but he had no choice but to go with it. (actually, you do have a choice.... try PC World and see how much they charge!!)

Foolishly, I thought, perhaps they are a little skint, as it is, after all, a credit crunch, and approaching Christmas, so I said I would back up the 6 gb of photo's they had amased onto dvd's, build the computer and install the OS (all included in the £40 labour charge)... do all the updates, install anti virus and anti-spyware, bring it round, and install their printer, scanner, Internet, webcam and Kodak Software for them (a pretty good deal when compared to the Prices that PC World would charge don't you think?)

I asked them for 50% of the invoice up front (as like everyone else, I am feeling the pinch)....they refused!...Ok I thought..., perhaps they've been ripped off in the past, there are a lot of cowboys in this game, I shall go and buy the stuff myself, which left me pretty skint last weekend I can tell you!...but I should have it built by Monday or Tuesday, and I am not particularly happy about it, but there you go.

So, I requested that when i deliver it and set it up, could I have cash instead of a cheque, as I would not be able to wait the five days it takes to clear a cheque in my business account....He reluctantly agreed.

I built the PC, got it all going fine (it's a good one too) AMD2 5000, Asus Board, black and silver case and 1 gb DDR2 800, for those techies amongst you!

Copied all his photo's across, as well as the DVD's...and took it over and installed it all...perfect, works a treat.

Only thing I forgot on the day, was to pick up the DVD's from my workshop, but advised him I would try and drop them off later that day. (bearing in mind, he has all the photos on his hard drive anyway)

I forgot!...My only crime!

He paid me only £100 in cash, which he counted several times...and handed me a cheque for the balance...By this stage, I just wanted to put as much distance between him and me as possible, so i took the cheque, and banked it.

Today, I got a phone call from him to say that "He wasn't happy with the level of service he received, as I had promised to deliver his DVD's, and had'nt done so, and I had just taken the money and that was that!"

I fully expect him to cancel the cheque, as he has shown that he is a complete tw@t at every turn, and I am very upset that he has spoken to me like that.

It leaves you feeling that perhaps I should have done more, but this is clearly one of life's assholes.

So, Mr G....... I wish you and yours a wretched Christmas, a miserable New Year and in the words of my Hero 'Black Adder' "May the Yuletide log, slip from your fire, and burn your house down"

And the very Best possible Christmas to the rest of my Customers, past, present and future

Sounds just like a neighbour of my daughters.
She gets people in to do jobs and then takes photos and when the job is finished and it is time for the reckoning she gives them part of the money, says she is not satisfied and will sue them if they query anything.
She is blacklisted by the locals and has now to get work people from outside the area.
She is having an extension done at the moment and although the "builder" was warned he has started to do the job. Yesterday he turned up  and was spoken at for some time and left slamming the gates. He should have heeded the warning.
Today he was there for an hour and left.
To all work people beware this woman.

I have been a Self Employed Puter Engineer for the past five or so years.

I wonder what PC World would have charged them.  Many, like youf, who are self employed undercharge for their skills.

Can I tap your good side?   I'm about to buy a new laptop.  The one that I'm interested in is a Dell Studio 15. (one up from the basic model)  Any comments.  I replaced my desktop about 6 weeks ago.

Well, not having come across this particular model, I had a quick look at the reviews.
Mostly pretty favourable...Only downsides are it's a bit on the heavy side, but if it's a replacement for your desktop, then not a major issue.

Sound quality, speed and Display, all good!.... A bit hard to work on from the Engineers point of view (but that's not your problem anyhow)

All in all, a good buy apparently!...So, enjoy

Thanks.  I know that it is a bit heavy but I'm getting a laptop trolley for use on airlines.  It's not a desktop replacement. I replaced my desktop a few weeks ago.  Whilst it will go to Australia with me for three months, each year,  I also use it alongside my desktop most of the time at home when I'm involved in Genealogy.  it's easier than switching screens all the time.

You don't do transatlantic calls then. Bit restrictive that.

You were asked by another member SEP, so not unsolicited, but you could think about a banner too, and it would give you more coverage than a single url on a single thread here.

That would indeed be the most exciting callout I would ever do!  :D
