national anthems

Having watched a fair bit of international sports lately why is it that the British national anthem seems to be the only one about a person and not the country.

I'd guess that we consider that the Queen represents the country.  I'd still prefer the Queen to a Political President.

We have national anthems. Land of our fathers for the welsh, flower of scotland for the Scotch (sorry I am English and that is what I say) and Danny boy for the northern irish ( some of them anyway).

there is no national anthem for the englsh as we are not a nation.

god saave te queen is an anthem for the UK

I always think as "Swing low sweet chariot" as our national anthem when it rings out at the rugby matches. Lovely song and we should adopt it to every major sporting event. Has far more passion and rhythm than the other.

The other verses of the current National Anthem are very much about the country as a World power at the time it was written. I don't think the words and music are by the same person either. I think the tune is used by a few other countries too, in their own anthems, with different words.

I quite like the Jerusalem song, it seems to praise a lot of the things I have grown to love about your country over the years. I don't hear the song played very often but when I do it always brings me close to tears for some reason. A national anthem, especially at sporting events, should have that ability I reckon. God Save the Queen doesn't do it for me the same way, I'm afraid.

Not a fan of National Anthems personally.

All the British Ones just sound old fashioned and most foreign ones are just abysmal

We Jocks understand why the engurlish use the term "Scotch"! We have a similar problem by refering to the ingurlish as woodclanging morris dancing poofs.
