I know a man who fought for this country during ww2, was sunk three times, saved a number of lives, became a teacher, served that community for over 40 years, was a scout for arsenal, for 30 years was working voluntarily for the samiritains in durham (again saving lives), retired from teaching but continued his voluntary work until 80 yrs + and when someone decided he should be nominated for an award... they were kindly told that because he had not done it for a while (due to parkinsons), he was not eligable.

We, need to nominate people like this.

if your wife has been doing volunatry work for 40 years you can nominate her, but do it now, not next month. Someone who has been doing good for the community is much more worthy than Tim Henman anyday.

This is where we go wrong not putting the people who do good in the lime light ?
Celebrates get a lot of cash for what they do
Most of the people that do good work do so for free ?

Yep its all about the lime light

I agree about the many people whom deserve awards that do it for helping others

All the "SPORTS"  guys  its just a job

Sorry to say to  about  Police men and soldiers and firemen whom get awards for bravery doing there job

As if they didnt do what they did where ever.....  the normal gadge on the street not going to get the same opportunity ??

Sometimes I feel I should get a bravery award when I flick the breaker switch on a electrical  megawatt   rewire job !!

I think the whole thing has been 'cheapened' by celebs and Sports people.

I cannot stand it, when (for instance) Chris Tarrant introduces the Olympic bods as 'Heroes' on millionaire

I dont see anything heroic about rowing a boat, driving a racing car, swimming up and down a pool, or peddling a bicycle I'm afraid.
(with the possible exception of the Paralympics)

She retired about 10 years ago.  That probably puts her outside the time line.

Why I asked is I was told he was a tax exile living in Switzerland. If so why even consider him for honours.

Well he is British, born and bred. He still has a home in Britain. He just became the youngest ever F1 World Champion, in only his second season, he has trained and trained and trained since the age of 5, he shows what can be achieved with dedication.

I think some sports stars deserve honours, Steve Redgrave, Chris Hoy, Brendan Foster, Rebecca adlington... what these people have achieved is extraordinary and gave pride to the country. That's fair enough I think but Tim Henman? I could never understand what he got an OBE for, he never won any Grand Slams?

The ones that really bug me are the ones from the world of business that get titles for getting rich.

Why do you feel that way?

I can agree with you if you mean the silver spoon brigade, who are born into it...but what is wrong with someone working hard and building a successful business that keeps the economy running and ensures employment for people?

Surely, they should be rewarded for their efforts?
