Peeing Ban
« on: Oct 05, 2009, 11:12 »
My home town of Varde is causing a bit of stir in my country at the moment with support groups, parents, therapists and local politicians all shouting against each other:

http://politiken.dk/bagsiden/article800254.ece

For those of you who don't speak Danish too well, this is a quick translation of the article:

- - - -
School: Small boys should pee sitting down.

It makes a lot of mess when school boys pee standing up says Vestjysk school principal.

The days of peeing standing up are over.

That is the outcome at the Brorson School in Varde where letters have been sent to parents of school boys in the lowest three classes. In these the school is telling the parents to teach their small boys that it makes a mess peeing standing up and that they must sit down instead when they use the toilets of the Brorson School.

School principal, Oluf Nissen, knows he cannot make an outright ban on peeing standing up but he hopes the parents will take the hint well and teach the small lads that there is nothing wrong in peeing sitting down.

- - - -

On Thursday there was even a therapist who went public and said that telling boys to sit down peeing will eventually turn them gay.

It's amusing on so many levels but also a bit sad.

How would you react if you got a letter from your young lad's principal like this ?

The posts we get here are certainly rich and varied. Glad to see you've got as many loony rule makers in Denmark as we have over here in the UK. Sitting down turns people gay, eh? First time i've ever heard that one!

It's all a bit silly, really, but the stir it's caused is incredible.

Apparently there are already 30+ groups on Facebook supporting either way.

A bit off subject, but my doctor told me that all men over 50 years of age should sit down to pee when they go during the night.  We moved on to another subject and I forgot to ask him why. It wasn't that I had a problem.  It just came up in conversation.  I follow his advice most nights.

Quick up-date.

This week things came to a conclusion with the principal's suggestion being put into place and any boy in the lower three year classes at his school not following the new rules risks getting letters sent home to his parents.

End of the day you could put that letter and its terms to good use. Like toilet paper. :hi:

Thought I'd 'up-date' the Danish toilet situation a bit. Not from my home town of Varde this time but a proposal being discussed at a council meeting in our Capital tonight:

- - - -
It is a sure sign of a lack of equality that all around Copenhagen men can urinate standing up at urinals while women are forced to hold on or queue to use ordinary toilets.

This is the view of Iben Wiene Rathje, Socialist People's Party member of Copenhagen City Council, who has proposed that urinals should be set up where women can urinate standing up.

The proposal will be considered at the Council's meeting on 8 March, and it is no coincidence that this happens to be International Women's Day.

"Our Equality Policy states that equality and gender-related issues should be integrated into all policy and planning. However, all over the city we are still setting up urinals for men and leaving women to hold on. Even in our own council hall, women who use the only conveniently situated toilet are frowned upon," writes Iben Wiene Rathje in her grounds for the proposal.

She believes that the male monopoly on standing up to urinate is helping to cement discrimination in daily life.

"It's relevant to the way we think about our gender. The urinal stems from the time when it was only men who worked, went out and drank beer, while the women stayed at home. You could therefore say that that our current toilet provisions are keeping us stuck in certain historical patterns," Iben Wiene Rathje told jp.dk.
