Phone Tax
« on: Jun 17, 2009, 08:29 »
This new monthly 50p phone tax you guys are getting soon how will that work in real life ? I know it's meant to create money for your Government's plan to sort out every single UK household with broadband and that they need to find the money for that somewhere hence the new tax. But how will it actually work ? Is it on all phones or just phones using a monthly subscription service with a tele provider ? Do people from abroad need to pay something similar when staying in the UK when using UK nets ? Do I have to sign up for it somewhere ?

Why should people who dont want a digital Britain have to pay it. It would be better if they put a tax on ISP monthly subscription then the people who use the system pay for it .

Our Government comes up with all sorts of ideas and plans.  Most never happen.  No details of the current plan have been released.

The Government makes wild statements.  An example.  "We a going to put a further 2 million pounds into the health service."  Six months later "We are putting 5 million into the health service"  When questioned they admit that the new 5 million figure included the 2 million from six months ago that had not happened , so far. So effectively they were only putting in another 3 million.

Then a year later we find out that they haven't put in an extra penny.  They have a big mouth but little action.  That was an example and not real figure.

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

That's not entirely true, though. A very good friend of mine is reading the Digital Britain Report as we speak as it hit his desk this morning. So the report is already out.

It's a proposal in a report, nothing more at the moment.

Whatever it is it's still part of a report already out.

Anyhoo, I don't mind paying £6 a year when I move to the NE soon for a phone tax as long as I know.

I personally object to it having to be any kind of tax at all. If the government want it, then the government should pay for it, maybe out of the money they save on MPs expense claims.

Ah, now there's a thought. They must be saving a few bobs on that account soon.

Indeed it is but a proposal like many more.  Whether it is practical or not is to be seen.  And as you say why should the tax payer fund it?   If it is wanted let those who want it pay for it.

We subside too may lame ducks in the excuse of "let the taxpayer fund it."

The problem is the goverment offers free broadband for every home and it wont be long before there is a excessive  rise in Stalkers,Perverts,Fraudsters and other types of net scum. It would be like they where opening gates for them thus resulting in popular websites being taken down and new rules which really wont be for the better.
