Santander Bank Charges
« on: Aug 27, 2010, 15:23 »
Well, I went the route of the Bank Charges..and got all mine back, before they lost the Court Case..and it didn't affect my Credit Rating!...Just goes to show, what a rip-off it all was.

I have since moved from Santander (ex Abbey) who charge £35 to Barclays, who charge £8

Big Difference!...and guess what?...because I am not crippled by Bank Charges now I've swapped...I am debt free!

Good show Barclays...and f*ck you Santander!!!

SouthernExPat I must be missing something here, although admit I haven't followed this thread.
I've got three accounts with Santander and have never paid a penny for anything.
What did you pay for?

Well Lancelot

It all started when my Wife's pay day was changed from 15th of each Month, to the 20th of each month.
I did online banking with (what was then, The Abbey) and I made a simple mistake......all my Direct debit's and Standing Orders bounced on the 15th, because her wages didn't go in....An honest mistake, because I was new to online Banking! (this is going back 4 yrs now)

That was a total of 9x dishonored Direct Debits@ £35 each = £315 in unpaid direct debit fees...which Abbey refused to negotiate..... They took the £315 out of my account the following 15th of the month...which again bounced...taking me overdrawn by a further £35!!!!

Total Then owed £350....which is where the spiral started of course!...we ran a tight ship...and ended up robbing Peter, to pay Paul...to cover the Bank Charges...meaning we had to owe other creditors money, and cancelling Direct Debits, for fear of them Bouncing, and adding a further £35 for each!

It doesn't take a Mathematician to realise where that was going to end.....so we pulled the Plug on Abbey....changed to Barclays...Paid Abbey off...and told them to blow it out their arse!!!

I've never understood why people go overdrawn.  They must sail very close to the wind.  Even when I was in the R.A.F in 1959 on 16 shillings a week (80p) I managed to stay afloat. My wife, then, got £2 16 shillings marriage allowance from the R.A.F. I claimed mileage for my car for journeys to and from camp and we rented a flat, but we made it. Must admit though that I was very good with a pipe syphoning petrol from the generators on camp!

Got it in one. If you are paying out the same money as you're bringing in (and many do), it's very easy to run into problems.

I was always brought up to spend less than I earned.  If you haven't got it, don't spend it as you are living above your means.  Maybe I've been lucky but I think that it is the way I handled my finances.  Others who I worked with spent theirs in different ways, yet we earned the same, and their comment was "It's alright for you, you have money".  We make our bed and lie on it.

Fair enough...but the point I was making,(and NEForum too) is that unless you have money to spare..a simple mistake can end up with you being financially in the Soup!

We didn't go on a careless spending spree...it was a mistake, but boy did we pay for it!...but one thing I did learn...the smiling faces of the Cashier's in your bank, is a front for a ruthless, unscrupulous bunch of greedy mothers!....I would trust an enraged Cobra a lot further, than I would trust a 'Listening Bank' in future, thats for sure!

We make our bed and lie on it.

Your bed needs Mr. Reality to sleep in it for a couple of nights, instead of Mr Smug!

A great deal of people aren't in the priveledged position you are. It's hand to mouth for them, just earning enough to keep themselves afloat.

Many would be envious of your current lifestyle, with winters in Australia every year and talk of lending people 20 grand, especially to a guy you know doesn't have much. No one begrudges the fact that you may have earned it, but please don't scoff at those less fortunate than yourself. Don't lecture those who may barely have enough money to live on, saying they've made their bed. That's why I feel you're being smug.
