Smoking in front of youngsters 'is child abuse'
« on: Aug 09, 2010, 09:25 »
I would agree that smoking in front of children is obviously stupid and irresponsible, particularly in cars,  but is calling it child abuse a bit over the top ?

What would you call it when someone forces youngsters to inhale toxic smoke which contains over a dozen known cancer causing substances. Subjects them this despite knowing it can damage their health.
No different to locking them in a small room with burning tyres or the like.

Is this a question of when parents who would act in this particulary stupid way are challenged about it would complain that it is their right to do what they like.
No doubt they would complain about the "nanny state" or it's "pc gone mad" in their own defence.

Not defending an obviously filthy habit, but the way I see it is if a person accepts that smoking in front of children is abuse, then those same people should regard inviting their own children and other families to BBQs as abuse because Tobacco is the remnants of plants and so is charcoal` anyone who drives a car and stops in a traffic jam in town is a child abuser because they are forcing children to breath in their toxic fumes. Put a kid in the same room as a smoker for twenty minutes and the kid might not like it` put that same kid in a room with a running car for twenty minutes and the kid will be dead! Hands up those who do BBQs and drive cars.

I suppose it boils down to the fact that there are so many ignorant, under-achieving assholes calling themselves parents these days, that the Government have to 'think' for them

Seems reasonable that forcing kids to smoke should be illegal. Child abuse? Willfully harming the health of your own child means yes IMO. At least the smoker smokes filtered gunk. The passive smoker doesn't have that 'luxury'.

Not many people have 20 BBQ's a day. though
And not many people keep a car inside the house...
