Youth Issues - random rant!
« on: Aug 21, 2007, 12:22 »
I was originally going to post this in the ?Re: Appeal over teacher killer ruling? thread, but I though better of it as it is more a general rant and I did not want to hijack a current affairs discussion.

I was watching a news report yesterday concerning roaming gangs of youths.  The reporter who was out on scene interviewed a couple of individuals.  On girl stated "there is nothing else for us to do so we have to gather here", well it was all I could do not to shout Boll*cks!

There has always been little or nothing to do for youths in some areas.  When I was the same age as this girl that was interviewed there was little to do where I lived.  However, I did not hang around on street corners making a nuisance of myself, getting rat a**ed on cheap cider and doing god knows what else.  The inference was that as there was "nothing else" to do then we "have to do this".  What utter crap.  Go to a friend?s house and watch a DVD or if nothing else just stay in and watch TV, or even, for gods sake, read a book.  I could quite happily have swung her round by her hair until she saw sense, her and her mumbling swaggering male companion!!

I would happily argue that there are not enough youth facilities, but then I would also argue that the facilities that are available are not being used in any case.  I recall a conversation with a friend of mine who had been involved in youth work for some time.  Some 15-20 years ago he would run a disco Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and it was always packed.  I recounted this to another friend who is currently involved in youth work and she stated that when they do provide social events, they are under attended.  The draw of drinking cheap booze, "getting wrecked", drugs and god knows what else is far more appealing.

I concede that young people have always congregated in such a manner, and hell, I even did from time to time, the fact is though, that in present society these ?gatherings? often have a morn ominous agenda, you only need to read other posts here or listen to the news to appreciate that.

I feel heartedly saddened that such behaviour can be allowed to continue, who is to blame, parents, lack of police action, the leniency of the courts, that is an argument that will never be resolved my friends.  I feel it would be better to solve the problem rather than play the blame game.  Although in trying to solve the problem more questions will be raised than can be answered, for example, how to tackle the problem, who to punish, how to punish??..?

It is also sad that you hear more and more now about how bad young people are today and how evil they can be.  Off the top of my head, I can not think of one example of a positive news story concerning youths recently.  It would be unfair to say that all young people are bad, we all know that they are not and we all know of many young people that are quite the opposite of the problem that currently faces today?s society.

I really hope that some positive action is taken soon to address this ever growing problem, however, I for one will not be holding my breath.

It's a downward spiral. I can only assume that their parents did something similar, and it doesn't bear thinking what their offspring mike be like. I know it's quite a generalization, but I can't see it being far off the mark.

Both of my kids would fall into the catagory of youth, the eldest is 15 and the youngest is 14 next month.

I agree that there should be more affordable recreation available locally, but the lack of structured entertainment is no excuse for bad behaviour. The kids have more available to amuse themselves than we ever did at the same age - what with Pc consoles, Internet, sports facilities etc. They just need a little encouragement to make use of what they have.

We often have a houseful of kids on the Playstation for evening with Pizza, especially on winter nights, quite often they stay over and disappear lunchtime the following day - it maybe noisy but at least I know where they are.

I think that too many parents are too busy looking out for their own interests to let the kids have some space (and make some noise) at home.

I know the great majority of kids are good kids, but some are obnoxious scumbags who are quite happy that way, have no intention of working, enjoy causing trouble and revel in the whole scene. They need stamping on and teaching that there will be a consequence to their behaviour, not a slapped wrist and told not to do it again. They are an uneducated, feral product of a system which now allows anyone to get away with anything they want. They know the difference between 'right' and 'wrong' and they actually choose 'wrong', because it's apparently more fun to kick someone's head in than do some charity work. They know exactly what the law allows and they play it for all they can get (just read the Chapter every week). They are taking the p**s and the system lets them do it. There is only one offence that will receive anything like the justice it deserves now and that is terrorism. The rest? Well, the state is so blinkered by the threat of terrorism that it lets all the others take place without any comeback. The criminals all think terrorism is great, it gives them room to operate while everyone is distracted.

If you have any problems with incidents around your house and can't get police to attend, just ring the police and tell them you have a crossbow and will happily shoot the scrotes that are terrorising you. There'll be 50 armed response officers surrounding your property within minutes to protect the rights of the yobs that are causing you the bother. Warped or what?

I'm glad it was not just me being hormonal.  Good to hear that some others agree, yet sad that we should even be having this discussion.

It all comes down to respect. Or lack of.

Anyhoo, I hate how young people can't seem to lift their feet when they walk, the sound of feet dragging (especially flipflops) is doing my head in !

In Many cases, I think that the Parents are to blame as well!
There must be tons of 'Alledged' parents in this country, who have never even taken their kids to the seaside, or to a Farm /Zoo when they were little.
I am sure that Victoria Sponge (love the name change btw) has engaged with her kids, brought them up in a stable, and loving enviroment...and is reaping some of the rewards for her hard work (I hope Myself and my Wife have achieved the same)

But when you look at some of the parents of these kids...It should be of little surprise that they drink and do drugs! (after all...look at their role models!)
Klendathu's reasons too can ALL be cited as additional reasons for this behaviour.

At the end of the day, I think that we have tried to find happiness in this country, by making money, and keeping up with the 'Jones's...and having both parents working their buns off 24/7 just to pay the mortgage to live in the posh side of town...and following Madonna's song about the Material world....and have lost sight of what LIFE is all about!!

People critisise what is said in the Bible...but if they bothered to read it, perhaps they would see that it was all happening 2000 yrs ago as well, and it warns us of exactly what is happening today!!

Whilst we continue to hide our heads in the Sand...fail to take responsibility for our actions, and chase the filthy Lucre....Our society will continue to break down...And it doesnt matter what 'New Labour' try to sanitise / Pasturise/ Homogenise... with their false,  euphoric sh*thole, PC existance...we are all doomed!

So wake up Britain...The sh*t is already here!

I just think that it's a shame when all the youth seem to get tarred with the same brush just because of their age.

Don't get me wrong - I know there are little S**ts out there who deserve the wrath but the majority are just normal kids trying to get on with their lives. You don't hear about the 95% of kids that don't get into bother and do tow the line. All that gets reported is the bad ones - and most of the bad kids are descended from the same families who were in trouble 20years ago. If the parents set poor role models then what can be expected of the kids.

This is one of the points that particularly narked me.  I can not remember the last time I picked up a paper, TV Radio or Internet News medium reporting positive youth behaviour.  It fair gets on my bristols!

What has struck me from my visit to Toronto...Is that this is a British Problem!
This whole Lad / Laddette culture of Binge Drinking and Loutish behaviour just doesnt happen in Toronto.

My friends there, leave their house unlocked when they go out, safe in the Knowledge that it wont get done over...People leave their Car Windows wide open, cos it was so hot!...No gangs of Bling covered Hoodie tosspots hanging around on street corners there...It is truly pleasant, and you feel safe walking around. (there is crime obviously...not trying to kid anyone to the contrary) but no gangs of Youths with nothing to do except drink cheap lager and hoy up all over the road!

We have to move away from thinking it is clever to get completely stoned on a friday night, and start fights and all this machismo crap that seems to be considered so funny, and cool amongst certain tw*ts in our society.
We need a Police Force who enforce the Law properly, because they will be backed up by the Courts.
We need proper sentencing...And we need BAD LADS ARMY for those who decide to take that route!

We cant be like Canada sadly, because thuggery seems to be so deeply engrained now in the psyche of (certain members) of British Society.

I dont have any answers whatsoever, apart from what I would like to see happen...But I am very pesimistic about the Future of the UK sadly...And I will do all I can to try and persuade my son to get the hell out of here when he is old enough!... Because this is not the Great Britain my Parents fought the Nazis for anymore (IMHO)

One of the reasons I left Ferryhill was the amount of crime and it was no where near as bad then as now. I also used to work at Aycliffe School which opened my eyes to how some people lived. Canada has been a good move, apart from the winter, even though I originally came without a job.
