The Sportsman Inn - Canny Hill
« on: Sep 23, 2004, 09:35 »
Took a trip to this pub last night. Intended going to The Dog at Heighington, but had a change of mind (or rather the other half did) and we ended up at Canny Hill, nr Bishop Auckland.

The Sportsman is a very old fashioned sort of pub, Cruella remarked of the dining area looking a bit like her gran's living room. Creaky chairs and stuff.

We were warned when we asked about food that there would be a wait, but happy hour drinks kept us in an understanding mood. It took approximately 20 minutes before our order was taken and another 30 for the starter to arrive, which was still a bit long really. The food was ok, with a combo platter followed by Cumberland Sausage and Chicken & Bacon Melt. The menu is nice and varied and should suit most people.

In short, the food was ok, if a little lacking in presentation, but the wait was a little too long, even though we were told about it beforehand. Visit if you're in no hurry.
