Orchard Shops, Durham Lane, Eaglescliffe

It seems we have lost a lot of our local shops . . .

Now I know what the funny smell was when we got up this morning - not me, for a change.

Yes so sad. I think the shops were built around 1968, some of them family businesses. All gone. And a fireman injured. I hope they eventually manage to rebuild them.

A general view - and an ironic unintentional comment in the name of the tattoo parlour . . .

I wonder if they'll be able to save any of it. Looks as if it would be easier to knock it all down and start again.

pretty sad, I get to know all the local shops travelling about (ok mainly the chip shops) hope they get it sorted pretty quickly or people will be heading for Tescos and won't come back!

Sainsburys opened today. The hairdresser has asked her clients to go to her shop in Yarm, the chemist is doing a delivery service the best he can, the tattoo artist is working in Middlesbrough (I think), the bookmakers is asking people to go to Middlesbrough or Stockton. The council has said they will help the businesses to get back up and running.

Just been on the news. The fire was started deliberately.

Since Monday the most damaged buildings have now been knocked down.  But no news of future plans.  It looks like a simple (!) replacement job.

Nope.  My recollection of the last news in the D & S Times, or the Lib Dem "Contact" sheet, or somewhere, was that planning permission had yet to go in - but don't quote me on that.  I have seen no firm news whatsoever.

Yep.  Seen it.  We liked the bit about the shops being the place we (oldies) used to go to for our social networking.  My wife and I thought about this, and decided that we could only remember a few times when we had actually seen anyone we knew !

But it will be good when they are up and running again.  We wonder whether the same businesses will  return, or whether there will be some new faces - or empty shops.

Progressing slowly.  The car park is being relaid, lighting has appeared . . .    It has been announced that the Pharmacy will incorporate a Post Office, many thanks to Mr. Burrell, who has kept his business and our supply of medicines going from a Portkabin since the fire.  Well done Mr. B.

The shop fitters are in - things are looking up . . .
There is going to be a Post Office situated in the Pharmacy - well done Mr. Burrell.
