July 2013 - a very hot month
« on: Nov 04, 2013, 13:20 »
July 2013. A very hot month - the warmest since 2006, and the sixth hottest ever, with only 1921, 1976, 1983, and 2006 having been warmer. A notable heat wave with a prolonged period of high temperatures between Saturday 6 July and Wednesday 24 July when 28 C or more was recorded at one or more location on each of those 19 days. The last time the UK saw such a long period of hot weather was August 1997 (also 19 days). The highest temperature of the hot spell was on Monday 22nd, with 33.5C recorded at Heathrow and Northolt. The 17th was a hot day too, with 32.2C at Hampton (London). The 19th saw the highest temperature for Northern Ireland with 30.1C at Castlederg, Scotland with 29.7C at Cupar (Fife), and Wales, with 31.4C at Porthmadog. There were several warm nights, with the minimum of the night of the 22-23 being 20.7C at Heathrow. The end of the heatwave was particularly humid, followed by thunderstorms and widespread downpours, with some locations seeing more than 50 mm of rain in 24 hours. Overall rainfall averages 65.0 mm over England and Wales (98% average), but this was nearly wholly due to the wet final nine days. Goudhurst (Kent) saw just 6 mm. The wettest day was the 27th, which saw an average of 24mm, with Tideswell (Derbyshire) receiving 89 mm that day. It was the second sunniest July on record, since 2006, with 289 hours (142%), St Helier seeing 327 hours.

For once in a while we get some really nice weather just at the right time ........ our holidays  :D

We spent 2 weeks at the begining of July camping "dooon sooof" and only had one night when it rained and does it make a change camping in weather like that rather than two years ago when most of what we had was wind and rain.

Tadger, you mention it was the sixth warmest on record but only mention five years, was the other one the 1997 you mention later in your post?

To clarify that a bit (they weren't my comments, they come from Trevor Harley's excellent British Weather website.)

It was the 6th warmest since 1910, the warmer ones being 2006 (19.7C), 1983 (19.5), 1976 (18.7), 1995 (18.6) and 1921 (18.5). There is confusion on when 'records began'; some sources only go back to 1910 when quoting, but the Central England Temperature series goes back to the 1600's, and daily averages are available from 1772 (the ones I use)

Prior to 1900, there were warmer Julys in 1783 (18.8), 1852 (18.7) and 1808 (18.4), with July 1859 and 1868 judged equal to July 2013
