On January, 1st  2015 there is a new law that comes into effect that allows local authorities to mark historic county boundary on road signs, currently they are only allow  local authority boundary to be marked. So in the new year local authorities of Tyneside can put road signs at the river Tyne saying "welcome to the historic county of Northumberland, or County Durham".  The government now encouraging people to support there historical county by flying the flag of there historic county.

For hundreds or a thousand years theres always been a dividing line between Newcastle and Gateshead.

This is better then the Tyne and Wear, NewcasleGateshead brand which is not a not a destination but an bureaucratic word mark telling me how I should think.
