From the Northern Echo.

MEMBERS of the North-East’s biggest council have awarded themselves a 20 per cent rise in their basic allowance.

The increase, proposed by an outside panel appointed by Durham County Council finance chief, Stuart Crowe, was approved at yesterday’s full meeting of the authority.

No one voted against the proposal, which attracted 69 votes in favour from the 96 councillors present.

The remaining 27 members, including those attending from the ten-strong Conservative group, abstained.

All 126 county councillors will now receive a basic annual allowance of £13,000, up £1,921 from £11,079, backdated to April 1.

Wouldn't we all love to be in a position to vote ourselves a 20% rise?  Why should Councillors be given any allowance, surley it should be on a level with voluntary work.  My wife and I did voluntary work in addition to our employment for 42 years and never recieved a penny. We worked a full day 'till 5pm then dashed home for something to eat and left home at 6pm 'till after 10pm. Saturdays and Sundays we were also involved, most weekends.

I would ask the question
How much rise are the Council employees getting this year ?
Did the Councillors not say they would be SAVING money this year ?
Oh no Has the Council gone back on its word ? That is terrible. I believed they were so much for the people and not for themselves. Silly me.

A lot of people thought that, but we now realise that they are only in it for what they can get out.
