Major fire at Newton Aycliffe - Stillers

Explosion on Aycliffe industrial estate - video (From The Northern Echo)

This is in the next unit from where I work. Looking at the smoke and flames from where I stood at 1.15 today I'm surprised that no-one lost their lives. It took hold so quickly that the building was engulfed within 15 minutes of the first exposion. The fire crews stayed back as the goods continued to explode putting thick black smoke and steel high into the sky. and as I left the police had no plans to evacuate the surrounding building and told us we were safer indoors to avoid the falling debruit and smoke.

Bonfire Night certainly lived up to it's name! At first we thought it was us that was on fire, but were glad that it wasn't, and that the wind was blowing away from us. Early indications are that no-one was hurt and that's good news. No doubt we'll hear a lot about the aftermath. That's two fires in companies adjacent to us in the last 18 months.

they have also announced that the regular Bonfire celebration at The Oak Leaf is cancelled until further notice due to the proximity to the fire.

Its right near the complex and not to far of the blue bridge just wack this postcode into google maps DL5 6SP and youll see exactly where it is. By the way even when in horndale you can hear the explosions. My Sony Cybershot could even hear the explosions lol

Dl56sp - Google Maps

Off the mini roundabout where the School Aycliffe road goes up to the Oakleaf Centre past Hydro/Ineos.

It appeared to be the new building to the far left of the tag that actually went up

At first when someone told me about it i thought this was nothing serious until i saw the massive ammounts of smoke and heard the loud bangs thats when i began to worry.

What ever caused this im sure people wont forget this.Im glad i captured this on video and took photos.

Thankfully the wind was blowing away from the Ineos plant. Operations were shut down as a precaution, and the water supply was made available to the fire service for fighting the fire at Stillers.

The water bill has got to be sky high for them id hate to receive the water bill for that company and read it. Unless the tax payer is paying the costs for all that mess down there.

Gaz - I don't think for 1 minute that the fire tenders got close enough to find the water meter at Stillers and ensure all the tenders were joined after the meter . They attach straight into the nearest mains point on the ground
And hopefully the insurance company will cover all related costs !
