Ramblings from Canada
« on: May 19, 2005, 15:49 »
I guess I'll kick off this forum with some random ramblings.
I emigrated to Canada in the late 60's after finding life too expensive on my monthly take home pay of 55 pounds!
Canada and the U.K. have changed greatly in the meantime, although the differences in language and culture have narrowed.
With a big effort and great concentration I can still do a flawless Geordie accent - to the great amusement of my Canadian wife (she thinks it's sexy), although in everyday speech I sound more Canadian than English. I am constantly amazed at the extent of the American and Australian(!) words and phrases that have crept into everyday use in the U.K. It is a shame that the Geordie dialect and the Northumbrian burr are fading but that's progress innit?
