Alan Shearer has been touted as England's best centre forward for some time by those in the game, but others see him as a dirty player who always fouls the opposition to gain an advantage.

What do you lot think?

If Shearer was really a dirty player then his disciplinary record would be a lot worse than it is. One (extremely dubious) sennding off speaks for itself. To be a good centre forward you have to be able to dish it out and be prepared to take a bit. Big Al wins his free kick then gets on with the game not like some of the nancies out there.
I think history will record that Shearer was one of the greats because of his scoring record but there have been more dazalling and entertaing forwards who will be remembered for their style. I have total admiration for the man for opting to play for his home club when the glamour clubs (Man U in particular) were desperate to sign him. I just hope for his sake he can win something with The Toon before he hangs up his boots.

I agree. As a centre forward you get kicked around and if you don't protect yourself you'll end up injured and probably not do your footballing ability justice. Watching Niall Quinn too was watching an artist at work when it came to mixing it with defenders. Awkward to mark, he got penalised a lot when it was he that was fouled. Completely differnt style, but one the opposition would always complain about because they couldn't control him.

Alan Shearer's role at Newcastle will be a big one to fill when he retires. I'm not sure that it will be possible.

Alan Shearer's illegitimate, he's got .....oops got carried away there.

Alan Shearer is the best striker I have seen in my 15 years of watching  professional football.

That man has done everything his club AND country have asked of him!!

His goal to games ratio is awesome both at club level and international.

Alan Shearer is God!

Long live SAFC.
