Consett Weather
« on: Feb 09, 2012, 14:55 »
Frozen Rain today up here, causing chaos. Cars and people sliding all over the place. The grit in the bins doesnt seem to be salt but brown gravel? not sure if this is cheaper than salt, but its a waste of time as it just froze along with the rain? Its supposed to do the same again tonight, so watch out people. :cold:

The stuff most Councils use around here is the brown rock salt mined in Cleveland rather than the white stuff most people associate as salt.

It gets difficult when it rains as the salt (of either type) gets washed away or diluted by the rain.

If the roads are the same tomorrow as they were today, don't go out in your car, unless your papers are in order and you've booked a slot at the Crem. Absolute suicide.

This freezing rain episode continues. I've just (foolishly) been outside. It's drizzling, and the temperature outside is -0.2 degC. It's impossible just to stand up in places. My front street is up at the moment as we're having a gas main replaced. No traffic down the road means the surface is just now sheet ice. The pavements aren't much better. I don't recall a freezing rain event lasting this long for a lot of years. Normally, the warmer air sweeps in and everything melts, this time it's two nights-worth of glaze. There'll be broken arms, hips and legs a-plenty here tomorrow unless we get a rise in temperature soon.
