Three Inches of Snow Overnight
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 15:58 »
Woke up today to find that my roof flat has turned into an igloo... Cold and dark as we speak and I noticed on the BBC news ticker at the top of my screen that Moscow has minus 27 degrees today, I hope the weather the coming days aren't coming from that direction... My poor knees don't like it too cold

Dunno, pumpkin, but though it's rather cold here today it's beautiful as well. There's a thick layer of snow on all the trees, frightfully Bing Crosby  :)

No, there's no snow for us for the foreseeable future. Maybe February will bring some.

Just watched the weather news on the telly and though it won't get quite as cold here as it was in Moscow today the coming week-end is still going to be chilly with degrees down to around minus ten...

Well, my country is very close to yours and we're having some pretty nasty weather here today. The falling snow has turned into what can best be described as falling "ice" and hurts your head if you're not wearing a hat. They say that the massive snow we're getting here just now is due to our location. Apparently we're just in the middle of where the mild weather from the Atlantic (and you guys) meets the very cold weather coming in from Russia. The confrontation of the two weather systems takes place right above my country and let me tell you this, the weather we're having here today is not very nice to be outside in.

It may or may not reach you guys but this is what Sky News are reporting:

"Britain is expected to get a blast of the bitterly cold weather that has frozen Moscow in temperatures as low as -40C.

The Russian capital has been experiencing Artic conditions this week with mercury possibly dropping to a record low today.

And the weather could be heading straight for the UK, with forecasters predicting an end to the mild spell we have been enjoying.

- It's going to get much colder towards the end of next week, says Sky News Weather's Steff Gaulter.

-  You'll really notice the difference, although it certainly won't be as cold as Russia.

Moscow is in its fifth day of a cold snap that has reportedly claimed the lives of 24 people. Reporting from Moscow, Sky's Laurence Lee remarked that the physical symptoms of the cold are extraordinary.

-  If your eyes water, the water freezes, he said, and if it gets any colder your breath will crystallise, then tinkle on the ground.

Whilst conditions will not be so extreme in Britain, the Met Office is warning that frost and snow could bring the country to a standstill.

Meanwhile British Gas has warned that Russia's deep freeze could send the gas prices soaring in the UK through a "worrying domino effect"

Sounds interesting Alex. Looking at the Atlantic charts I can see you have a weather front over Denmark at the moment, with cold continental air to it's east and the warm maritime rubbish we've been getting to your west.

By tomorrow, it looks like that maritime warmness may reach you briefly, but it will only be a thin warm sector, bringing NW winds on Saturday and possibly a return to wintriness for you on Sat/Sun, with the possiblility of significant snow.

After that, we in the UK will be under the influence of cold continental air for a couple of days, but by next Tuesday we look to be  back in the mild air, coming from the Spain/North Africa region. After that, it's anyone's guess.

Look out for potential Saharan dust falls early next week.

Yes, interesting describes our current weather perfectly, mate. They're even talking about closing schools tomorrow (some were already closed today). I know the weather must be horrible to drive in and all and that safety is prob the reason behind these closings of schools but I can't remember any single time my old school was closed down due to bad weather. I'm not an old fart or anything but it's Winter, we're a Scandinavian country, surely it's been like this before without everything having to shut down for the day ?

When I was a kid...

Well the charts changed so much after that little gem of a forecast that it makes me look a bit dim. Note to self - never forecast more than 3 days ahead.
